Emergency Responses to Operating Scenarios and Incidents

This course will provide training in how to respond to specific operating scenarios and incidents at an MWC worksite. It will include how to shut down plant and/or systems in the event of an emergency; connect temporary generators in the event of power outages; respond to fires in the ventilation and air treatment systems; clear vortex blockages.

Description

The course will cover responding to operating scenarios/incidents.  Please note that this is not a maintenance training course.  The course will cover:

  • Shutting down plant and/or systems in the event of an emergency:
    • Making the area safe;
    • Protecting the worksite/tunnel operation (emergency shutdown);
    • Locating further information (Operation and Maintenance - O&Ms);
  • Connecting generators in the event of power outages:
    • Specifying required generator;
    • Method of connection;
    • Locating further information (O&Ms);
  • Responding to fires in the ventilation and air treatment systems:
    • Key risks;
    • Firefighting provision (Air Treatment Unit (ATU) deluge);
    • Procedure for coordinating with/assisting London Fire Brigade (LFB);
  • Clearing vortex blockages:
  • Access arrangements to assess and clear blockages to the tunnel vortex.

 

Outcomes

On completion of the training, Delegates are expected to understand:

  • How to shut down plant and/or systems in the event of an emergency;
  • How to locate shut-down points;
  • The provisions made for connection of a generator in the event of a power cut;
  • The provisions made to detect and fight fires in the Air Treatment Chamber (ATC) and the procedure for coordination with LFB;
  • The provisions made for clearing blockages to the vortex and the typical approach to be taken.

Competency/Skills Requirements

Before attending the training session, Delegates are expected to complete:

  • Safety Fundamental Modules, Human Machine Interface (HMI) Operator Training Worksite Level, Maintenance Fundamentals and site familiarisation for sites within individual’s remit;
  • Have familiarity with industry standards and working practices regarding electrical isolations, confined space access.
