Inspection of Near Surface Structures

This course provides an understanding of the design provisions within the permanent works to facilitate the inspection of structures, e.g. CCTV access covers and personnel access to below ground structures via ladders. It also provides training on where to find the CCTV coverage reports and an understanding of the typical CCTV and lighting technologies that are available to support the inspections.

Description

Key Topic Areas

The course will cover:

  • Provisions within the permanent works to enable inspection of structures:
    • CCTV access covers;
    • Personnel access to below ground structures (Ladders);
  • Limitations of CCTV provision, typical extent of ‘in person’ inspections required;
  • Example CCTV and lighting technologies;
  • Where to find more information:
    • CCTV coverage reports;
    • 10-year inspection plan.

This course will cover the generic/standardised provisions that are common to all worksites.  Worksite-specific provisions and limitations will be contained in the 10-year inspection plan.

Near surface structures includes all below ground structures up to the point that the connection culvert joins the drop shaft.  Inspection of the shafts and tunnel is covered in a separate course.

Outcomes

On completion of the training, Delegates are expected to understand:

  • How to inspect the near-surface structures using the provisions made in the permanent works to minimise manned access;
  • Where to find the CCTV coverage reports and thereby establish the extent of ‘in person’ inspections required for each site;
  • The CCTV technology available on the market.

Competency/Skills Requirements

Before attending the training session, Delegates are expected to complete:

Before attending the training, Delegates are also expected to have:

  • Experience in managing/carrying out inspection of reinforced concrete structures.

This course provides training on how to inspect the access steel work used across the TTT scheme, e.g. ladders, stairways, access hatches and handrails. It also provides training on how to operate the access hatches and the vortex safety grilles.

More Information

This course provides an understanding of the design provisions within the permanent works to facilitate the tunnel and shaft inspections. It also provides an understanding of how to access the tunnel; the ventilation requirements for shaft/tunnel entry and how to find the CCTV coverage reports. This course also provides a summary of the 10-year inspection plan
