Tunnel and Shaft Inspections eLearning

This course provides an understanding of the design provisions within the permanent works to facilitate the tunnel and shaft inspections. It also provides an understanding of how to access the tunnel; the ventilation requirements for shaft/tunnel entry and how to find the CCTV coverage reports. This course also provides a summary of the 10-year inspection plan

Description

Key Topic Areas

The course will cover:

  • Provisions within the permanent works to enable inspection of the shaft and tunnel:
    • CCTV access covers for shaft inspection;
    • Man-rider access to the shaft for inspection;
    • Man-rider and material access to the shaft base;
  • Ventilation requirements for shaft/tunnel entry;
  • Accessing the tunnel:
    • Online sites;
    • Offline sites;
  • Where to find more information:
    • CCTV coverage reports;
    • 10-year inspection plan.

Each section above will include discussion of the key hazards presented by the activity being undertaken.

This course will cover the generic/standardised provisions that are common across multiple worksites.  Worksite-specific provisions and limitations will be contained in the 10-year inspection plan.

Competency/Skills Requirements

Before attending the training session, Delegates are expected to complete:

Before attending the training, Delegates are also expected to have:

  • Experience in managing/carrying out inspection of reinforced concrete structures/tunnels.

Outcomes

On completion of the training, Delegates are expected to understand:

  • How to access the shaft and tunnel for inspection, including using the provisions made in the permanent works to minimise manned access;
  • Where to find the CCTV coverage reports and thereby establish the extent of the ‘in person’ inspections required;
  • The scope of the 10-year inspection plan and where to find it.

Similar courses

This course provides an understanding of the design provisions within the permanent works to facilitate the inspection of structures, e.g. CCTV access covers and personnel access to below ground structures via ladders. It also provides training on where to find the CCTV coverage reports and an understanding of the typical CCTV and lighting technologies that are available to support the inspections.

More Information

This course provides training on how to inspect the access steel work used across the TTT scheme, e.g. ladders, stairways, access hatches and handrails. It also provides training on how to operate the access hatches and the vortex safety grilles.
